Travel Journal

Travel Journal began with a clear vision from the client: a journaling app built for travelers who want to capture and share their story without letting technology get in the way. They loved documenting where they had been, but they did not want a public feed of their location. Instead, they needed a private space where a select group of people could follow along—on their terms.

The brief

The client came to us with a set of requirements shaped by how people actually travel. The first was speed: they needed a way to share a trip in the moment or afterward just as quickly. Being present on the road mattered more than filling out long forms. Technology should support the experience, not slow it down.

The second requirement was lightweight capture. Location and time needed to be documented with almost no friction—no pressure to add photos, notes, or other details right away. Users should be free to expand an entry later, or leave it as a clean timestamp and place marker until they were ready.

The final requirement was data ownership. Journal entries had to be exportable at any time, without paywalls or lock-in. Even in a paid product, the client was firm that user data should always belong to the user. Their research showed too many apps treating that data as something to hold hostage.

Designing for the traveler

We designed Travel Journal around those priorities: private sharing with a trusted circle, fast capture while moving, optional detail when inspiration strikes, and free export whenever the user wants it. Story views, timelines, and trip details keep the journey organized without burying the essentials. Entry screens stay focused so adding a moment, a photo, or a note feels natural—whether on the move or once they are back home.

The result is a travel journal that stays out of the way until it is needed, then makes it easy to capture the moment, shape the story later, and keep ownership of every entry.
