Save Wright

Posted on 2008 05, 07 by naccrat

Frank Lloyd WrightI’m not a art historian by any means but the countless hours that I have spent in a dark room looking at slides of art and architecture (trying to stay awake) have given me an appreciation for art history and the importance of preserving it. So, the reason I post this is because there is a Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy that is trying to raise enough money to preserve the last standing hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Park Inn Rehabilitation
Golden Opportunity, Grave Challenge

Mason City, Iowa, has the only remaining hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. On the divide between the Larkin Building and the Unity Temple in his Prairie period and Midway Gardens and the Imperial Hotel soon to come, it shares features of each period and predicted the latter in its massing. In gradually deteriorating condition since 1922, the resolution of its present live or die situation is underway in the hands of Wright on the Park, Inc. (WOTP), newly formed to come to its rescue.

AIGA SLC 100 Show

salt lake city aiga 100 showI had the chance to attend the AIGA 100 Show on Friday, May 2nd. It was a good evening and a great chance to see the designs that are being recognized for there great work. I liken the evening to a good movie that just keeps going and wont end. It was fun to be there but it was unfortunately a little too long.
Along with the award portion of the show they also had a guest speaker, Jann Haworth (I think that is her name). She gave three presentations about her work and pop art from the past and how it is being applied today.
The food wasn’t anything great, plus it was the same food as last year. But like I said, it was still a good evening because it was more about the design work.
The judging of the design entries took place in Los Angeles by three designers, Deborah Sussman, Petrula Vrontikis, and Rob Bynder, some of the highest recognized names in the design community. There were the usual design firms that were recognized, such as Stuck, Axiom, and Axis 41, just to name a few, but the most exciting was Logoworks by HP being recognized for five logo designs.
It was great to see Logoworks get recognized on a local level and I want to congratulate the designers for their great work.
