Wordpress did a complete design overhaul on the administration side. They did a good job of letting us know this was coming and from seeing the mocks the change was even welcome. Although, after updating some of the site I use it on I wasn’t impressed. The layout and design are very nice, no complaints there, but the functionality and ease of use is not there. Maybe there needs to be a learning curve and I have to get used to it, but why? I should be able to go in there and pick up right where I left off.
I use Wordpress more as a CMS and the blog functionality is only a minor part of my sites. It seems that with the new design, the ease of using it as a CMS has been taken away. My biggest complaints are the manage-> pages section. I use to be able to see the page ID numbers right off so I could you the exclude or include function for what pages I wanted on my menu, but it is gone. Also, the widgets, now I have to select which widget I want to see from a drop down bar. How lame! I used to be able to see all of my sidebars at the same time. How is that helping me out? Also, what is with the Advanced Options on the bottom of the page. Now I have to scroll down to use those instead of having them conveniently on the sidebar?
Something good went very wrong with this wordpress update. Was there any user testing or input from the community on this?
I haven’t fully gone through the admin area because I was getting frustrated by the items that weren’t functional but not all of it is bad. The auto update for the widgets is nice. That is about all the good things that I’ve seen.
